Global coffee consumption continues to grow steadily, creating new opportunities and challenges across the coffee supply chain. According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), worldwide coffee consumption reached approximately 177 million 60 kg bags in the 2023–2024 coffee year, reflecting a long term annual growth rate of about 2 percent per year. Emerging markets in Asia and the Middle East are playing an increasingly important role in this expansion. Countries such as China and South Korea have seen significant growth in café culture and specialty coffee demand over the past decade.
Traditionally, Europe and North America have dominated coffee consumption, but the market landscape is shifting. The ICO reports that the Asia and Oceania region now accounts for roughly 25 percent of global coffee consumption, making it one of the fastest growing markets in the industry. Urbanization, rising incomes, and younger consumers exploring specialty beverages are fueling this trend. As more consumers become interested in origin, processing methods, and sustainability, demand for traceable and high quality green coffee is also increasing.
For traders, producers, and roasters, this expanding demand presents both opportunity and pressure on supply chains. Growing consumption means that maintaining stable production levels and protecting coffee quality throughout the supply chain is becoming even more critical. It also increases the importance of transparent sourcing, reliable logistics, and strong relationships between producers and buyers. As global demand continues to climb, understanding where consumption is growing will be key for companies positioning themselves in the future coffee market.
