A new project has begun in El Bueyerito, representing a valuable opportunity for the agricultural development of the area and for expanding Costa Rican cacao into international markets. This initiative takes shape as a joint venture between the local producer, Don Roberto; the purchasing team; and Simon Wheeler, a Danish chocolatier who joins the project as a capital investor. Together, the three parties aim to establish a high-quality, traceable cacao supply that meets the demands of premium chocolate production.
Before moving forward with planting, a full set of technical studies was carried out to evaluate the viability of cacao cultivation in the region. Soil characteristics, climate behavior, and long-term economic projections were analyzed. The results confirmed that El Bueyerito offers optimal conditions for producing fine cacao, and that establishing the crop is profitable in the medium and long term. These findings provided a solid foundation for shared investment and risk, strengthening the joint venture’s commitment to long-term success.
With this information, the partners decided to formally launch the project. Don Roberto contributes his agricultural knowledge and direct management of the farm, the purchasing team ensures market alignment and quality expectations, and Simon Wheeler brings his expertise in fermentation, sensory profiling, and the technical standards required for high end chocolate production. This shared structure ensures that decisions, resources, and responsibilities are distributed strategically among all involved.
The project is designed as a collaborative effort that enhances processes, strengthens local capabilities, and creates new opportunities for the community. The joint venture model promotes transparency, shared value, and a long-term vision, ensuring that each actor benefits from the development of a differentiated and competitive cacao.
This new initiative marks an important step for El Bueyerito, positioning the community as an emerging source of high-quality cacao and as a strong example of how producers, buyers, and international investors can work together to create sustainable agricultural development with global reach.
