Why Green Coffee Samples Are Essential Before Buying

Buying green coffee is a decision that goes far beyond reading a score or looking at a list of tasting notes. Samples allow buyers and roasters to evaluate a coffee before committing to a larger purchase, helping them understand its sensory profile, physical condition, and suitability for their market. The Specialty Coffee Association identifies purchase sampling and quality screening as important applications of cupping within the green coffee trade.

Through a sample, buyers can evaluate characteristics such as aroma, flavor, acidity, texture, aftertaste, defects, moisture, and bean condition. The SCA's Coffee Value Assessment considers both physical and sensory characteristics when evaluating coffee, providing a more complete understanding of what a lot can offer. This is particularly important in specialty coffee, where coffees from the same country - or even the same farm - can have very different profiles depending on variety, processing, harvest, and lot separation.

Samples also create a common language between producers, exporters, and buyers. Standardized cupping makes it easier to communicate expectations, compare different coffees, and determine whether a specific lot matches the flavor profile a roaster is looking for. The International Coffee Organization highlights standardized quality evaluation as an important tool that allows green coffee purchasers to select coffees according to quality and other characteristics.

For this reason, requesting and evaluating a sample is not simply an extra step in the buying process. It is one of the most important tools for making informed sourcing decisions, protecting quality, and building stronger relationships between origin and destination. Before a coffee reaches a roastery or coffee bar, the sample provides the first opportunity to discover what that coffee can become.
