La Cumbre

A Family Tradition in Tarrazú

La Cumbre

For more than a century, coffee has been part of the Jiménez family’s story in San Marcos de Tarrazú, Costa Rica. Today, Minor Jiménez, a fourth-generation coffee producer, continues that tradition through Café La Cumbre, a family project built around quality, innovation, and a deep connection to the land.

The idea of developing their own micro mill emerged when Minor tasted coffee produced on the family farm and realized its potential: “this coffee is incredible, something has to be done.” That moment led to the creation of Café La Cumbre and eventually to their first export in 2016.

The farm covers 70 hectares at approximately 1,650 meters above sea level, with around 600,000 productive coffee plants and an annual harvest of approximately 3,500 fanegas. The family works with Caturra, Catuaí, and Centroamericano, allowing them to explore how variety, altitude, and processing contribute to the character of their coffees.

Their micro mill produces Yellow Honey, Natural, and other honey-process coffees, with careful attention to every stage of processing.

For La Cumbre, quality is closely connected to traceability and responsible production. The farm follows practices focused on soil conservation, responsible agricultural inputs, and proper waste management, while holding certifications and recognitions including Bandera Azul, Kosher, low-emission, Denominación de Origen, and Esencial Costa Rica. Their micro mill incorporates modern drying technology, while Minor himself, as an agronomist, oversees the farm’s agronomic management and quality throughout the production cycle.

What makes La Cumbre particularly interesting for specialty coffee buyers is the combination of generational knowledge and a willingness to innovate. Producing specialty coffee at this scale requires constant adaptation, particularly as changing rainfall and drought conditions increasingly challenge coffee production.

For the Jiménez family, the future is clear: continue innovating while preserving the quality, traceability, and family heritage that define their coffees from Tarrazú.
