Finca la Virgen
Rooted in Legacy, Grown for the Future
Finca la Virgen
Located between 1,600 and 1,830 meters above sea level in the highlands of Costa Rica, Finca La Virgen is a family run project built on three generations of coffee-growing heritage.
What began with the owner’s grandfather has now evolved into a micro-lot venture guided by the passion and academic background of the current generation.
With seven hectares and approximately 30,000 coffee trees, the farm is entering an exciting phase, its first export was just completed in the 2024-2025 harvest, marking a new chapter in its journey into the specialty coffee world.
Finca La Virgen focuses on quality and innovation. While Catuai remains the main variety, the family has cultivated a vibrant varietal garden including San Isidro 48, Paraiso Amarillo, Catiguá, Typica, and Geisha.
This diversity is matched by their range of processing methods, washed, honey, natural, anaerobic, and fermentation-based, all crafted in small lots with attention to cup profile.
Approximately 150 fanegas are harvested annually, though only a portion is processed as they continue building their brand and relationships with specialty buyers.
Sustainability is a core principle, even without current certifications. The farm applies organic fertilizers, bio-inputs, and minimal agrochemical use. Shade grown practices are supported by fruit trees like avocado, banana, citrus, and plantain, contributing to soil health and biodiversity.
Composting and soil analysis are used to preserve fertility while aligning production with environmental care and community well-being.
The creation of their micro-mill stemmed from a desire for more control, traceability, and storytelling through coffee. The emotional reward of seeing their beans consumed abroad has fueled their motivation to keep improving.
As challenges like climate instability and market saturation persist, the family remains focused on education, experimentation, and quality as their guiding lights.
Finca La Virgen represents the evolution of Costa Rican coffee: rooted in tradition, strengthened by knowledge, and driven by a hopeful vision for the future.
