 Don Mariano

A Legacy of High-Altitude Excellence and Sustainable Innovation

Don Mariano

Perched between 1,800 and 2,100 meters above sea level in the highlands of Copey and La Pastora, Microbeneficio Don Mariano is rooted in a legacy that spans three generations of Costa Rican coffee growers.

With over 70,000 trees across 16 hectares under cultivation, this family-run project balances tradition and innovation in every step of their work.

Their coffee journey is not only shaped by experience and agronomic training but also by a strong environmental ethic and a desire to share their product directly with the world.

The family cultivates a diverse set of varieties Geisha, SL28, Esperanza, Milenio, CR95, Catuai, and Caturra all carefully chosen for their cup quality potential.

They focus on honey and natural processes, with controlled fermentation and anaerobic lots crafted according to client preferences.

With an annual output between 500 and 600 fanegas, and ambitions to scale up with their Copey farm, their micro-mill plays a key role in maintaining quality, traceability, and a close connection to buyers.

Sustainability is woven into the DNA of the project. Don Mariano practices shade management, organic composting from coffee pulp, mechanical weed control, soil conservation, and water source protection.

Their farm is certified under the Ecological Blue Flag program with three stars, and they are also part of Costa Rica’s NAMA Café initiative, demonstrating a clear commitment to climate-smart agriculture.

For the Don Mariano family, coffee is not just a crop, its identity, pride, and purpose. Having started exporting directly in 2019, the sight of their coffee being enjoyed abroad is both a personal victory and a source of motivation.

With deep roots in tradition, technical knowledge, and a forward looking vision, this producer stands as a compelling example of the new generation of Costa Rican specialty coffee.
